How we build it

Many of our patios are bluestone in a random rectangular pattern, the same blue-grey stone you see in the caps and treads all over the Cape. Others are concrete pavers, finished at the edge with a border course. Curves, circles and rounded corners are cut on site.

When the yard sits lower than the door, the patio is raised: a fieldstone or block face, and bluestone steps down to the lawn.

A patio rarely comes alone. A fire pit, a seat wall, an outdoor fireplace or a walk to the driveway can be planned with it, so the levels and the stone match.

Questions

Bluestone or pavers?

Both are on our jobs. Bluestone is natural stone, blue-grey with a cleft face, laid in a random rectangular pattern. Concrete pavers come in many colors and shapes and can be lifted and reset one at a time. We can talk through both at the free consultation.

Does a patio need a permit?

The state building code's list of exempt work does not mention patios, so ask your town building department. Within 100 feet of a wetland the Conservation Commission comes first. Our permits guide has the details.
